Our mission is simple:

Adapt helps cities and property managers restore urban soils through targeted compost application, supporting natural stormwater resilience while completing the loop in municipal waste programs.

Soil Restoration in Action

In 2022, while leading Compost Colorado, Vann Fussell spearheaded a transformative soil restoration initiative in Denver's Globeville neighborhood. Working alongside community partner Globeville First and supported by the Denver Economic Development Office, the project demonstrated the power of community-based composting. The team distributed 75 cubic yards of compost across 75 households, creating a model for how municipal compost programs could directly benefit residents while advancing climate resilience goals.

This project emerged from Vann's deep involvement in Colorado's sustainability landscape. As founder of Compost Colorado (CoCo), an innovative community composting company, and through his service on the Denver Sustainability Advisory Council and Waste No More Task Force, Vann gained firsthand insight into both the opportunities and challenges facing municipal waste programs. His work supporting circularity policies at local, state, and federal levels revealed a critical gap in the sustainability initiatives being launched across the country: while cities are rapidly expanding their organics diversion programs, few had developed effective strategies for returning this valuable resource to their communities.

Rooted in Resilience

In 2024, Hurricane Helene devastated North Carolina's landscape, overwhelming infrastructure and carving destructive paths through the region. As climate change intensifies, these severe weather events will become increasingly common, threatening our communities and infrastructure.

Urban green infrastructure serves as a crucial first line of defense against intense stormwater events, helping cities absorb and manage flooding naturally. This reality has shaped Adapt's mission, as we recognize that developing climate adaptation and resilience strategies is not just an ecological imperative, but an urgent necessity for protecting our communities today.
